A Brief History Of Aruba

A Brief History Of Aruba

Before visiting Aruba, it may be good to know about the local history and details of the area. As such, one may wish to note that the first inhabitants to the area were thought to have been Caquetios Amerinds from a tribe known as The Arawak. In fact, it is believed this tribe of original nomads migrated from other nearby countries. Of course, the fact that the earliest known visitors date back to 1000 A. D., leaves many more questions unanswered.

Actually, the island was first discovered when two early explorers discovered the area in the Summer of 1499. After which, one such explorer boasted of discovering the island. However, while both explorers referred to the island as the island of giants, it was originally given the name Aruba.

Although, while briefly given the Spanish name which means It Had Gold, no gold was found on the island for nearly one hundred years. So, the explorers returned to Spain with other commodities such as cotton and Brazil wood. At which time, the tales of giants and gold fevered a new frenzy and interest in traveling to Caribbean and surrounding islands.

However, while the island is a quite inviting paradise, travelers need to be cautious. For, it is a rather small island only covering 33 km long and is one of the smaller Antilles in the Caribbean where a number of young women have gone missing. In addition, located only 27 miles north of the coast of Venezuela, it also lies east of the Guajira Peninsula of Columbia.

In addition, as one of the four countries which help form the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the island has no administrative subdivisions. Of course, as the area is included in The Netherlands, most residents speak Dutch. Although, language can vary in many different regions when it comes to this area of the world.

Still, as long as those traveling in the region can understand at least a little Dutch in addition to their native tongue, travelers should have no problem at all. However, for those who do not know such languages, there are often travel guides who can provide translation and other such services to foreign guests. Of course, if such services are needed while on a pleasure trip, it is often good to plan and book such services in advance.

To this end, as the climate is warm year-round, those visiting the area can often expect a rather dry climate. However, the climate, humidity and warmth are often what draw many visitors to the area each year. For, whether one is cold or sweltering, the region can often offer great weather for rapid relief. As such, many travelers have now made arrangements to visit the island any time the climate at home is one which would otherwise best be avoided.
